Every two years, athletes gather from all over the world so that they can play together in the Olympic Games. When you add up the training, the travel, and the facilities, the Olympics cost billions of dollars. Add to that the amount we spend on professional sports around the world, and you might start to wonder: Aren’t there more important ways for us to use that money? You know, ending world hunger, curing cancer, endowing chairs for philosophy professors—that sort of thing?

But the verdict of history seems to be that every culture considers playing to be an important part of a well-lived life. So here’s a question: How seriously should we take playing?
